Reg. Charity No.1040291 |
The Trowbridge & District Youth
Band exists to : ·
Help
young people to enjoy music and develop their musical skills. ·
Give
musical performances to the people of Trowbridge and District. ·
Provide
a focus for families to enjoy music and each other’s company. The Band exists as an independant charity and whilst
receiving some grants, raises the funds for instruments, music and use of
buildings through the efforts of its own volunteers. The Band was formed in 1983 to provide playing
opportunities for the growing number of brass players learning in some of the
local schools. With the help and support of a number of parents the band
developed from the first five beginners to an organisation comprising of four
sections and over 120 players by the end of the decade. Although the '90s saw a national decline in the numbers
of brass players and schools not funding instrumental lessons, the band
continued to promote and extend the skills of young people above the age of
eight from Beginner to Advanced level. The instruments and players are much
used by all the local schools. Many of the players have achieved high success
with Music Grade Examinations, County and National Bands/Orchestras and some
have pursued music to college and professional levels. The main band has played at a wide variety of
events including local fetes, park and seaside bandstands and venues further
afield on "performing" holidays in England, Wales, Germany and
Holland. Guest conductors have included Dr. Roy Newsome, Duncan Beckley and
John Grinnell. Players in the other sections also have opportunities to
perform. As well as music making, the band has developed a
strong social life. |
